The Tasting Notes

Reviews

Honest, unhurried notes on cigars I have actually smoked — appearance, draw, burn, and flavor, scored out of a hundred. No advertising, no borrowed opinions, no rush.

Padrón

1964 Anniversary Maduro

Exceptional

A reference-point maduro. Dense, sweet, and unhurried — the kind of cigar that makes you put down whatever else you were doing.

Appearance · Box-pressed, oily, with a deep espresso-brown wrapper and barely visible seams. The kind of roll that announces competence before you light it.
Draw · Perfect resistance. Enough air to keep it burning cool without ever feeling hollow.
Burn · Razor-straight from the first inch, with a firm ash that held for nearly two inches before I chose to tap it.
Flavor · Cocoa, espresso, a faint cedar note, and a long, sweet finish. The sweetness never tips into cloying — it reads as the tobacco itself, not as an additive.

If you want to understand what a great maduro is supposed to taste like, start here. Then smoke it again in a year.

Iconic for a reason. Bold and complex, with a structure that rewards a slow, attentive smoke.

Dominican Rosado
Binder / Filler

Appearance · Rich reddish-rosado wrapper, well-veined but smooth, with a handsome band that has earned its familiarity.
Draw · Slightly firm at the start, opening up beautifully after the first half inch.
Burn · Even, with a slightly wavy ash that held without trouble.
Flavor · Black pepper up front, settling into leather, cedar, and a lingering spice. The complexity builds rather than flattens.

A cigar that has been praised so often it is easy to be skeptical of — and then it proves itself again.

Appearance · Silky, oily, uniformly colored. Handsome without being showy.
Draw · Effortless, almost to a fault — pace yourself or it runs hot.
Burn · Consistent and true, with a light grey ash.
Flavor · Cream, espresso, a touch of black pepper, and a sweetness that carries through the final third.

An everyday luxury that punches well above its price. A reliable friend.

Elegant and grown-up. A fine cigar for a conversation that deserves one.

Not a cigar to write home about — but a fine one to write with. A dependable companion.
